Mest 2

For the MEST2 coursework I’m going to produce a real life style or reality product, which will be targeting E4's demographics 15-35 year old. The five programs I have chosen which broadcast on E4 are:

    Made in Chelsea
        Waterloo Road
       Misfits

Creating Media: Research and Planning

Misfits always stars with a flash back or a very good open sequence, and I think I can add this in my production, as I'm showing the main character, and location and the name  in the opening scenes of the production. Moreover in the production of Misfit there is sound in it, non diegetic sound is being played in the production as it set the mood and set the genre of the production, and I think this is really effective, picking out the best sound track to feature in my production. The sound of misfits doesn't fit well in my production but I feel that I would use this still. Another difference is that I’ll be using bright colour to show the location, setting and characters in the production and it links well with show like Made in Chelsea and The Only way is Essex, also the open sequence of misfit is very long and I think that I’ll shorten mine and make it very effective toward the audience, but use very fast shot to engage the audience, however, I want to show the intro very which will provide some idea of what our storyline will be, but not giving too much away.

Waterloo Road has some elements in my production. Some of the elements of Water Road are main character, and location and the name in the opening scenes of the production. The start of the open sequences always start with the character, so I would add this in my production, also  show the location of the school, so I would add this in my production.  . This also relates to our idea as throughout the opening 2 minutes there was non - diegetic sound playing, I think that I would add the in’s but not use this for the whole opening sequence, I would use only for 1 minute of the production. The name of the show is in white bold writing but I’ll just before this, they show the name of the show but in shape of tables and chair, I would use this and apply this to my production linking to the plot of the production. Water road always show a flashback of the previously shows which show the plot of the TV series. Also we do not give away much in our opening sequence about our storyline.

Made In Chelsea has most of the elements I'm going to uses in my production like the 180 degrees shot, as where two character are talking to each other, which I'll use in my production also I can add flash backs. I think I can add this in my production, as I'm showing the main character, and location and the name  in the opening scenes of the production. Another difference is that I’ll be using bright colour to show the location, setting and characters in the production and it links well with show like the only way is essex

ill Manors analysis

Ill manors film trailer contains a release date, a credit block, director and producer name, institution information, taglines, studio, production team, the funders, and the distribution, the film also has reviewer quotes and the star rating of the film. Moreover, the film has the main star of the film and also the title of the film appeal at the end of the film trailer. All of these are the code and convention of a film trailer and are very important to the audience, because it can identify what people are watching like genre and would it be appealing. The film trailer shows the story which is a plot (disequilibrium) so the audience watch the film to see what happens through the film.

Firstly, the ill manors film trailer beginning with a tagline ‘We are products of our environment. Some environments are just harder to survive in." it first shown at the beginning of the trailer in white bold writing and black background so it can stand out toward the audience because it the first text and image the audience see through the trailer. To says to the audience that not everyone lives the same, where we grow up it different and some place are harder then the other. It makes the audience think about the film trailer ahead.

The last thing the audience see is the release date, which is shown at the very ending of the film trailer, so the audience are most likely to remember that date and go and watch this film, again it was in white bold writing and had a black background so it can stand out and be appealing toward the audience.

Ill manors trailer distributor was Revolver Entertainment, Revolver Entertainment Company have distributor many British film over the last five years, such British films like Kidulthood and Adulthood and also Anuvahood, which all films were very effective to British culture and made lot of money in the box office. The trailers are shown via the internet website like YouTube, social media website like Facebook, old fashion like cinema, DVD and newspapers. But Plan B uses his music career by producing song from the new album called ill manors, so he uses synergy to cross promote the ill manors film and the ill manors album, this can connote that they want a bigger and wider target market by using these e media sources.

The film ill manor is a British film and relates to British culture, to make ill manors a great film, Ben Drew has chosen low budget actors and actress to be in the film. The reason why is because one, the budget of the film is very low and they can not afford any Hollywood stars in their film, and lastly the actors are unknown in the UK, so it make the actors and actress look normal through out the trailer, make it look like normal people who live in these states and these environment.

The audience of the ill manors film are struggler in the psychographic group and in the demographic group it targeted at A/B and D/E group, the reason why fall into the struggler is because people in this group are struggling to cope and stand out in life and also the film trailer show a representation of people in the A/B groups as they would be very interested as they stereotype. The reason why I fall into these groups for the demographic groups because people are  not skilled, not working, full education and live with someone like a mother or father or even live on their own.

The film trailer uses very fast pace scene in it which can engage the target audience which is teenagers. The reason why the ill manor music video is targeted at teenagers because teenagers are very interested and like fast scene in music video, film and console games. The fast pace action in the film trailer is hitting teenager’s standards and ideals. Also the Ill manor Lyrics is very effective and engages the audience because many teenagers like fast rapping, repetition and they can relate with some of the lyrics being said in the song. The film trailer leaves an enigma code, via using the narrative, voice over. Barthes Theory. The film trailer first start with the voice over of one of the main characters of the film and telling his story then the second main character tells her story. All of this is non – diegetic sound.

The target audience of ill manors is D/E in the demographic group as people in this group like teenagers and younger adults are unskilled, unemployed, they are struggling to cope with the surroundings like school and collage which fall into the psychographic groups, people at this age are caring about the full education. Also many people can relate the film based on their life or another person life which they might know. The target audience ages are 14 – 25 years old

The Main Distributors are Revolver Entertainment.

How was Ill Manors promoted?

Ill manors was promoted by Plan B music career, as he was releasing a new album called ill manors, before releasing some of the soundtracks via radio, internet, magazines and the news, Plan B added these songs to his tour, performance and interviews which he was doing in 2010 and 2011

Compare this with a big budget blockbuster. What are the main similarities and differences?
Firstly, the actors in ill manors are not well known as they are low budget actor form Britain not like stars from Hollywood like the cast of TED, ill manors can film scenes in a British pub and look very good, but TED can not because it would looks to modern. The location of ill manors and TED are different, ill manors was filmed in estate and TED was filmed in American. Ill manors cost 100, 00 pound to fund the film and Ted cost 50 million pounds, and also the was based on the London 2011 and Ted was based on the bear who come to live and enjoys his time with his best friends.

How does the trailer for Ill Manors hook audiences into the narrative and pose questions that the film will answer? Identify 3 ways/techniques.

The music video uses very fast pace scene in it which can engage the target audience which is teenagers. The reason why the ill manor music video is targeted at teenagers because teenagers are very interested and like fast scene in music video, films and console games. The fast pace action in the music video is hitting teenager’s standards and ideals. Also the Ill manor Lyrics is very effective and engages the audience because many teenagers like fast rapping, repetition and they can relate with some of the lyrics being said in the song.

Moreover, the music video is stereotyping teenagers and young adults in the last tens days, stereotypes see teenagers causing trouble and problems on the streets, for examples using knifes and burning cars down and robbing items. I think that Plan B use this well, showing what stereotype think about teenagers in the UK, where they live, what they do, what colour skin and what they wear.

How does the trailer for Ill Manors balance plot and spectacle?
It first show scene of the film and edit it show it very fast to engage the audience and show the plot but not telling the audience what happen in it and the ending

Think about the certificate of Ill Manors (18 certificates). Research film certification and outline what is deemed acceptable for this certificate. What is the difference between a 15 certificate and an 18 certificate?

15

Language - There may be frequent use of strong language (for example, ‘fuck’). The strongest terms (for example, ‘cunt’) may be acceptable if justified by the context. Aggressive or repeated use of the strongest language is unlikely to be acceptable.

Nudity - Nudity may be allowed in a sexual context but without strong detail. There are no constraints on nudity in a non-sexual or educational context.

Sex - Sexual activity may be portrayed without strong detail. There may be strong verbal references to sexual behaviour, but the strongest references are unlikely to be acceptable unless justified by context. Works whose primary purpose is sexual arousal or stimulation are unlikely to be acceptable.

18

Where material or treatment appears to the BBFC to risk harm to individuals or, through their behaviour, to society – for example, any detailed portrayal of violent or dangerous acts, or of illegal drug use, which may cause harm to public health or morals. This may include portrayals of sexual or sexualised violence which might, for example, eroticise or endorse sexual assault

Where there are more explicit images of sexual activity which cannot be justified by context. Such images may be appropriate in ‘R18’ works, and in ‘sex works’ (see below) would normally be confined to that category.

Preliminary Exercise – Love Struck

Preliminary Exercise – Love Struck

My Preliminary Exercise show a short opening of a man walking into the canteen to talk to his girlfriend/lover and get dumped/heartbroken at the end. In my group, I deicide to work with Harpal, Vinisha and Harjio, we all deicide to do a romance sequence and call it Love Struck, as we felt it was right working with a boy and a girl, we felt the performance will be very interested and also feel that the sequence would catch the audience attention.

Our Preliminary Exercise ‘Love Struck’ starts off with a man walking toward a door outside the canteen. We first use a tilt up shot from ground then move it up with a tripod, only showing the back of his shoes and trouser, so the audience doesn't know who he is at first and what going on. I think that we got the right shots in the exercise with the Match on Action was very good as we got editing part it was very easy. We tried to use as many shots as we can like tilt down shots, more close up of the characters and long shot of the surround but we felt it was all right as it is, as it already has aspect of a normal conversation using these shots like over the shoulder shots.

Two things I have learnt from our Preliminary exercise are to make sure that we film in a quite and clean place. As in our performance it was too noise and a lot of interruption, we should of film it somewhere else or should have filmed it at another time; the audio was very bad, we found this out after as we watch it after, as we were editing it, we couldn't very hear any of the character talking in the performance. Also, we broke the 180 degree rule in our performance, first we got it right when they are having the conversation but broke it in the last two shots, when we shot the other side of the male character face, which it look like he swap seat with the female character.

Moreover, the last shot of rose flowing down on the floor is one of the best shots in the performance which to created an enigma code the audience what to know what happen to the male character, as we slowed it down to make a dramatic effective to the exercise, and it very easy in the editing part of the exercise to do. Also the acting of both character were very good which is the most important thing to get right for the performance, we needed to make sure that it good to make sure that it engage the audience. The story is straight followed, so the audience know what happen in the story. From where he walks to the door, open it, walk through and seat down and start talking to the female character.

I felt that my group wear very good, as I would work with them again in the future, as I learnt new techniques in the editing part like make shots duration faster and slower, which would belief me in the future as I make my own exercise, also would give me good ideas too.

Ill Manor

Ill manor is a hip hop song written, produce and performance by English Rapper and Singers Ben Drew, stage name Plan B. The song was written in reaction of the 2011 London riots and many issues for the youth in London not getting the attention and needs for the government. The song was first played on BBC Radio One on the 27th of February and then released on the 25th of March through American Label Atlantic Records and 679.The film "Ill Manors" cost £100,000 to make and made £453, 570 from box office in the first eight week. In order for Plan B to raise the funds for post-production, he went on tour in 2010 and 2011 performing "The Defamation of Strickland Banks Tour.

Media forms: What technique does the video use to establish the setting and engage the audience?

The music video uses very fast pace scene in it which can engage the target audience which is teenagers. The reason why the ill manor music video is targeted at teenagers because teenagers are very interested and like fast scene in music video, movies and console games.

Media Representations: How are gender/ethnicity/ age represented in the video?

Firstly, the ethnicity in the music video is mostly a mix of white, mixed race and black people, the reason Plan B has done this because both these ethnicity are mostly linked with these action like violence and crime and robbery. These are what stereotypes think about and Plan B uses this very well.  The gender which is shown the most in the Ill manor music video is mostly Boys/men, this can connote that most men/boys create more trouble linked with all crimes. There are some girls in the video by mostly the women are hanging with the men. Lastly the ages which is represented in the music video are teenagers and young adults and this is why I think that the ages for this music video is 13-21 years old because the music video is relating to the 2011 London riots and mostly the people in the riots where that ages.

Media Institutions:  In what ways is the video typical of music videos and what values does it promote?

The music video is a hip hop tune to show what stereotype thinks about the teenagers and their ways like crimes and violence. The music video has a counter – hegemonic due to the fact of the poor teenagers, which live on the estates and live in a council flats and crime, Plan B use the Music Video to identify two different types of people in the world, the Plan B use the lyrics to disagree with the upper class people in the demographics groups of A – B the people who work important jobs  and use the video /moving images to show the demographic groups of D – E who are unemployed and who are in school

Media Audiences: Who does this text/ artist appeal to, and why?

I think that this/Music artist appeals to 12 -15 and 16 – 34, but mostly the teenagers, the reason why I say this because these are the ages which are effected by the issues in this music video, for example the ages between 16 – 34 watch the news and are effected by the news, like tax and the weather and the ages between 12 – 16 are mostly in the news due to knife crime and vandalism. The text can identify too many people that not all teenagers act like this, for example not all teenagers live in council flats and commit crimes.

Psychographics

Mainstream

This is an insurance advert which shows a group of 4 walling down the stairs, and one of member fall down and hurts themselves, the advert show that everyone can get hurt at any time. The reason why this advert is mainstream groups is because it seeks security, so people don’t want to get hurt and injured and want to be protected. So this advert is made for many people who like to be safe and protected.

Aspires

This is an lynx advert which show many different people who are trying to their other half, and don’t care what they have to do, there find each other, which show they want attention, the reason why this advert fit into aspires groups is because they are seeks attention by using the new lynx products, so if people use the product they want all the attention by smelling good
Succeeders

This advert fall into the succeeders groups as it a company’s products, which keep people self determined and is a problem solve because with the iPad it well organise, in this group they seek control , and by having this products they have more power than other because the iPad are very expensive and many people can’t offered one. So people that own it are very wealthy
Resigned

I think this advert fall into the resigned group, as the advert is very old fashion and is an old tradition flash advert. They want to have the same things they had before like the same products, and washing with the same products at the same time of the day. This group is mostly for older people in the world
Explores

This advert suit explores, the explores want to know what to do, and they want to try something new for them selves like buying new adidas trainers which features snoop lion and a footlocker member bring him a pair of trainers. People want to seek and discovery new trainers on the market which make themselves, adidas are trying to advertise new products to new customers.

 Strugglers

This is a foxy bingo TV Advert which shows a largest women and a fox dance with each other and singing. This suit strugglers group as they have fun playing these games to win money, due to the fact they might not have any jobs and do not work, while playing bingo they are having fun picking numbers, they will be more happier due that they can 20 pound free when playing for the very first time

 Reformers

This advert is women drinking echo fall wines while sitting in the garden talking and laughing with each other, this advert fall into the reformers groups because they want to have fun and be happy with other, have freedom to do anything at any time in this life and don’t care about the consequence. The wine is reason price so people can buy it in local shops.

i think that reformers are people who like to have their owm freedom and what they like, also they want to have fun and be happy with others. The reformers like to change but not change right as they are enjoying time with others.

Represent

Sport Car
I think that this print and moving image advert is targeted at men but the moving image is target at young boy for want to own a Porsche sport car in the future, also is targeted for wealthy people because a sport car is very expensive. the reson why sport cars are target at men beacuse most men drive sport cars, but some women drive a lot of sport cars.
Firstly you could change the male characters in both adverts and put a female character in both of them, and adding a different background which is more appealing toward women, also the changing the colours, setting and etc.

Diving watch
I think these advert are both target toward men who like wearing expensive watches, both these advert feature men, this lead to the case that a lot of men wear watches. However many women wear watches in an everyday life.
One way how to change the primary audience toward women is having a woman instead of a man and adding women’s features like changing the colours and the changing the trailer to a film which is target at women like sex in the city or means girls.
Beer
I think that this advert is all targets at men who like drinking beer, socially. The reason why bottle beer target men because it an illegal for a young peon to buy beer and drink it in a pub or night club, plus you wouldn’t see a women holding and drinking a bottle beer. Moreover drinking beer has always been a man thing, and women like drinking tea and wine, it make them look more sophisticated.  You change the main target audience toward women by adverting a different idea i.e. wine or tea.
 toilet paper

I think that these adverts are target at women, mostly parents/mums because mums do the weekly shopping and buy all the products, and mother buys the toilet paper for everyone in the family. The moving image shows a mother beer telling the baby bear to wipe his bottom clearly use the products.
I think if they used something different like a soft football this can introduce a new audience like men and then many men will buy the products.

    Deodorant
I feel that these both advert all target men as deodorant is mostly for men because they want to smell good to attract more women. Well deodorant is both for men and women so it targets both genders.

     Cigarettes
I i feel that these advert both target men but it introduce children to start smoking cigarettes because this is a children television show and their main audience are children.  The ad feature two men smoking and the women are just watching them but at the time this show is aimed at children. A lot of women smoke cigarettes, so this can target both genders

Cleaning Products
I think that these adverts are target at women, mostly parents/mums because mums do the weekly shopping and buy all the products, and mother buys the cleaning products for everyone in the family. I think if they used something different like a soft football this can introduce a new audience like men and then many men will buy the products.

I think that these adverts are targeted at men, and who like wearing trainers and playing sport games, the advert features a British artist who is promoting his song and trainers. Well one reason how the advert can appeals toward women if the colours of the poster was appealing to girls and the music artist was a girls who lyrics can appeals toward girls like Adele and etc. #
Airline
This commercial is aimed at men and women because they both can flight a airline, and show how everyone is equal. The ad is aimed at both genders.  The reason why this ad is aimed at men and women because both genders are equal and can do anything they wish to do.

Skyfall

Skyfall  Samuel Felix

The action film I have chosen to write about its narrative theorise is the new James bond film ‘skayfall; mostly all the James bond have all been action film, so this James bond film has to be action but it has elements of romance and adventures and crime. The movie features Daniel Craig who plays James Bond, Dame Judi Dench who plays M and Javier Bardem who plays Silva. All of these actor, have been well recognize for playing these type of character in all their film they have all been in. the main story is James bond is losing his touch as a double oo agents and get shots, everyone think his dead, as this is happen someone is planning to kill M in the HQ’s and is using cyber threat toward her and her business.
Leading up to todorov theory the mains characters are Jamie Bond as the Hero want to protect M, M as the donor also who could say that she is princess because the villain want to her and the hero has to keep her and protect her too, Silva as the villain want to kill M and eve as the helper who just helps James bond out, what he need, she get it. Leading up to Barthes Theory has enigma codes and action codes in the film sky fall. By having enigma code it create a mood and suspense for the audience. Skyfall has to have action code because it action film and it a James bond films, the film contains props like guns, cars weapons and fighting these are all the elements for a good action movie.
Well, the first narrative pattern is that the film is linear; this means that it has a chronological sequence, so skayfall film was a beginning, middle and an end. Follow up on Propp theories the film has three stages, the equilibrium (the Fist stage, beginning ) is when James bond will helping M to tract down a villain on a train by having this fist stage is show the characters, setting and the type of genre the film is, disequilibrium (seconds Stage, Middle) is when James formally introduced to the villain and tell the plot and conflict he has with M and James Bond, also it create a mood and atmosphere for the audience watching this film and lastly the New equilibrium (last stage, End) is when the James bond  murder  the villain and M sadly dies from a gun shot worn in the stomach. Therefore the conflict is resolved and done.
Lastly the last narrative theory is Mr Hall and his readings, the three readings are Dominant, negotiated and opposition Reading. I feel that the reading of Skyfall is a dominant reading because it has a mainstream audience mostly men, because are more attracted to action film.

WWW. You do pick out some relevant details in places
EBI. This is a long way short of A level standard in general: basic written English is it good enough.
You need a lot more depth and detail to your analysis in both Q1+Q2.
L/R Re read your work + chooses one paragraph to re write properly
Paul Greengrass has used the camera movement to create an atmosphere of realism. The director has done this because it connotes a lot of tension and make uneasy mood from the character shown in the film. Some of the scenes from the film are not steady and moving, by showing this, it represent the audience that something wrong in the film

Breaking Point

WWW. I think that breaking Point had great editing and voice over throughout the trailer; also the trailer was very interesting to me and the audience. Moreover it had great shot during the trailer; one that I very liked is an over the shoulder shot of a man running toward a warehouse and a close up of the male head twisting and turn around to see if anyone is around him.aslo by doing this it create a evil and scary tension and mood.
EBI. If we can see the character a bit more clearly from the editing, it wasn't clear enough for the audience and also if some of the shots was shot better and be clearer, I think the audience will be more scared.
Breaking point overall included a vast amount of editing in which involved many types of high to low angle shots. The lowered angled shots allowed the villain or protagonist to be seen as a person with power in which changed the audience’s perspective of what people or the views see of him. As such, this creates suspense in terms of what the audiences views and opinions are which therefore leads to different opinions being made about the film trailer of breaking point.

Romeo
WWW. I thought that Romeo was one of the best productions I seen at GHS media award, I thought that it had great shots in the film trailer. One is where the camera focus pulls and the audience can see the character behind to the protagonist male character. Also Romeo has another great shot, this is when two character are holding hand, which create a mood and setting in the film trailer.

EBI. If the storyline of Romeo was shown better toward the audience, it was shown clearer and well basic and understanding to the audience .Also if they were more shots to create a romance and love setting.

Romeo is has many slow editing  shots which can highlight the genre of the film trailer, all of these can feature the camera movement and angles shown in the trailer. The camera movement and angle show all the character in film trailer, the hero, the helper and the donor all have been shown in way where we can identify who each person is. The main character had more close up shots, the helper and the donor only had medium shot, this show how important the shots are and I feel this is one of the best I’ve seen in a long time.

Fish Tank

All the Institutions involved in the production of Fish Tank. List them with a summary of what their contribution to the film was.
BBC Film, Kasander Film Company and the UK Film Council
Two other Independent British Film production companies – their “brand”, as well as current and previous productions.
Well first there is Caravan Film and Blast Film
Out of the three Production Companies you have researched, which do you see as most successful and why?
Out of the three production companies I feel that BBC Film Company is the best, they have fund many great movie over the last 10 years like StreetDance3D,Billy Elliot and The boy in the striped Pyjamas. They have done this to build a better brand name and image.
How much Fish Tank cost to produce (its budget?)
Fish Tank cost 3 million pounds
Film budgets – find 5 films made for £5 million pounds or less – what types of films are feasible on this budget?
·         In The Loop,
·         Nowhere Boy
·         Kidulthood
·         Shank
·         English
Mostly of these movies all has an element of action and drama in them.
How was Fish Tank funded?
The UK Film Council funded the film Fish Tank by the national lottery, money which is invested every year.
Research one other way that British films are funded. Are there any similarities or differences?
Other company relay on the other production they do to raise and fund their film
What is the target audience for Fish Tank?
The main target audience are mostly teenagers between 15-19 years old
Research the mainstream 16–25 youth cinema market and decide which 3 genres are most targeted at them and justify your decisions with your research.
The 3 main genres which targets teenager are
·         Actions
·         thriller
·         horror

Who is the main distributor of Fish Tank?
The main distributor of fish tank is ICF Films
What is the role of a film distributor? Are there any differences between distribution in the US and UK?
The role of the film distributor is to promote the film in any sort way.
How was Fish Tank promoted (when it was released in 2009)?
Well Fish Tank was first promoted and shown in the Cannes festivals
Compare this with a big budget blockbuster. What are the main similarities and differences?
Firstly they both have good plots and storyline during the film, both have hero, villain and etc. But the endings are not the same, some might end in a bad not good. Not a Hollywood ending and might be set in different part of the world
How does the trailer for Fish Tank hook audiences into the narrative and pose questions that the film will answer? Identify 3 ways/techniques.
Fish tank use a lot of camera movement and angle to display Fish tank plots, also the non diegetic sound it very up beat and the editing is extremely fast his can relate to the audience
How does the trailer for Fish Tank balance plot and spectacle?
First it starts all the positive in her life is display and shown in the trailer then show the bad thing happen during the film.
Think about the certificate of Fish Tank (15 certificates). Research film certification and outline what is deemed acceptable for this certificate. What is the difference between a 15 certificate and an 18 certificate?

15- Language

There may be frequent use of strong language (for example, ‘fuck’). The strongest terms (for example, ‘cunt’) may be acceptable if justified by the context. Aggressive or repeated use of the strongest language is unlikely to be acceptable.
Nudity
Nudity may be allowed in a sexual context but without strong detail. There are no constraints on nudity in a non-sexual or educational context.
Sex
Sexual activity may be portrayed without strong detail.
